Strand Jack System

Here at JB Rawcliffe & Sons Ltd, we are able to provide our customers with strand jacks for the technical handling, lifting, lowering or skidding of heavy lifting equipment.

A strand jack is a linear winch offering a compact, economical and extremely precise solution for heavy lifting and lowering operations. Strand jacks can offer an advantage in situations where there is a lack of space on site, allowing heavy loads to be lifted at great heights.

Widely used in the construction industry for constructing bridges, ports, and other large-scale plant maintenance projects, we’re confident we can provide strand jacks to suit your needs.

How does a strand jack system work?

Like you would pull a rope to lift or drag a load, strand jacks use a sequence of locking, pulling and unlocking.

Instead of using a rope and your hands, a strand jack has a bundle of steel cables or strands that are guided through a hydraulic cylinder. At the top and bottom of the cylinder there are anchor systems with wedges that grip the strand bundle.

The strand jack is often positioned vertically on a support beam, above the location where the load needs lifting to. However, these systems can also be used in the horizontal position.

The lifting or lowering movement is performed by a large hydraulic cylinder that extends and retracts. This cylinder is driven by electrohydraulic power packs and controlled by sophisticated software, allowing movement to be stopped and held indefinitely at any point.

The anchor systems at the top and bottom lock onto each strand, guiding them through the cylinder.

What are the benefits of strand jacks?

Strand jacks are completely automatic solutions, able to lift and lower automatically without any personnel at the jacks and possessing pre-set overload protection.

They offer remote control monitoring and mechanical fail-safe gripping mechanisms – if required. On top of this, they can be adjusted to operate at various speeds, automatically synchronising irrespective of loads.

Strand jacks hold their load mechanically rather than hydraulically when movement is stopped. They have a counterbalance valve that ensures smooth and controlled lowering of the load.

Need to hire a strand jack system?

JB Rawcliffe has you covered.

Our strand jack lifting equipment is an ideal heavy-lifting solution when a conventional crane is neither practical nor economical. Unlike cranes, these systems have a compact footprint, yet they can still lift and lower loads with great precision.

A strand jack’s lifting capacity can vary anywhere between 17 and 1,405 tons, depending on the model.

At JB Rawcliffe, we have various models available for hire and will happily talk you through the different options.

Our team will need to know a little more about your project requirements and what it is you’ll use the strand jack for. Once we know the basics, we can then identify the most suitable system for your needs – ensuring it offers the required strength and support for your load.

Cranes are usually too big for areas of restricted access, hence why we provide the strand jack systems. When lifting or lowering loads in tight spaces, strand jacking provides a compact, economic and controlled solution for lifting, turning, traveling and lowering heavy goods.

When heavy loads need to be moved, strand jacks are extremely useful. They lift and lower automatically – reducing the need for operators – and operate at various speeds. They also synchronise automatically, regardless of load and give unlimited travel.

Strand jacks are widely used to lift, handle and lower heavy machinery and equipment for construction and engineering purposes.

These systems are often used in the oil and gas industry, but can also come in useful for industrial plant maintenance projects, as well as ports, bridges and construction sites where space is at a premium.

Thanks to hydraulic cylinders and steel wires (strands), large and heavy loads can be moved to the required height or pulled (skidded) into the appropriate position safely and efficiently.
